For this paper, you have a CHOICE between the following two prompts: Option #1 Forensic Genetics For this option you will write a basic research report on the use of forensic genetics for something OTHER than modern day criminal investigations. Please DO NOT write about a contemporary criminal investigation. Pick a field of forensic genetics that you want to research and then describe it in depth for the reader. Some examples of DNA Uses for Forensic Purposes: •Establish paternity and other family relationships •Identify endangered and protected species as an aid to wildlife officials (could be used for prosecuting poachers) •Detect bacteria and other organisms that may pollute air, water, soil, and food •Match organ donors with recipients in transplant programs •Determine pedigree for seed or livestock breeds •Authenticate consumables such as caviar and wine •Confirmation (or non-confirmation) of historical theories •Investigation of the migrations of people out of Africa in pre-history Content Your essay should flow logically and must contain the following sections: Cover Page: Include a separate cover page with the following information: Title (be creative!) Your Name Bio 102, Lab Section # Introduction (1 paragraph): Begin your essay by providing brief background information on the topic of forensic genetics. Include how it’s different from normal genetic analyses. Once you’ve given some general background, state the specific topic you’ll be focusing on for the rest of your essay. Body (several paragraphs): The body contains the bulk of your discussion. You should first focus on providing background on your topic and include info on the methods used: how is forensic genetics being applied in your example? You have freedom in where you want to take your discussion, but be sure to give sufficient explanations of the forensic genetic methods and important findings that have come out of these analyses. Maybe discuss how scientists actually analyze the data, any controversies or downfalls to using forensics, or other interesting aspects you come across during your research! Conclusion (1 paragraph): Synthesize your findings and sum it all up, emphasizing the most important points in your essay. Leave the reader with a clear and satisfying conclusion. *It helps if you treat the paper as if the reader doesn’t know anything about genetics, the history of your topic, or the results. Basically, explain these topics to the reader with enough information that they understand your topic. References You are to use a minimum of 2 trustworthy sources.
