Hypothesis • Explain why this published research (your selected article) has gone to the effort to examine its hypothesis or research question. Use one or two key previous studies to illustrate how that previous work may have helped lead researchers to address your article’s research question or hypothesis. • In addition, or in the process of the above, explain, in your own words, the crux of the hypothesis or research question and indicate why this area of research is important or relevant. (Note: this is not your opinion; this must be supported by evidence of other research in the field). III. Methods • Select one aspect of the methodology and explain what it entails and why it was used. i. This involves selecting a particular method, procedure or technique, usually described in the “Data Collection” section of the Materials and Methods, and explain what information was collected and how. Essentially, what was measured and how. (Do not address the participants as a “method” if the study was conducted using human models). ii. Then indicate how this method fits, or was incorporated, in to the experimental design and how it will assist in testing the hypothesis. IV. Results • Select a representative figure or table from the results section and explain it in detail. i. Describe what data is represented in this table or figure, the values presented, and what statistical analysis was involved. ii. Indicate the significance of the results. Your critical analysis should include the following: V. Analysis • Identify and explain connections between different parts of the article i. Purpose and hypothesis ii. Hypothesis and experimental design iii. Results and conclusions • Identify and explain two to three strengths and two to three weaknesses based on your literature review of similar papers. • Identify and explain the implications of the work in the field and the possible impact on future work (i.e., where should the research go from here?)
