Section 3 covers the short story. You will read several short stories; primary among them are the two short stories by Flannery O’Connor: “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Good Country People.” In this section, you will write a research paper focusing on these two short stories. Write an approximately 750 word documented research paper of approximately 750 words over the following topic: How can we see the life and faith of Flannery O’Connor in her short stories? THE RESEARCH PAPER IS DUE FRIDAY, APRIL 26 AT 11:59 P.M. In addition to the two short stories assigned in the readings, which you must cite using the textbook, you must include at least three outside sources. Remember the purpose of outside sources is to support your points. Do not use the outside sources to quote background information on Flannery O’Connor, as that information can be found in your textbook. Do not use outside sources that are only reprints of the two short stories. Look for critical reviews of O’Connor’s work or reviews of books or essays written about her. Do not use Wikipedia or blogs, as they are not viable academic sources. Do not use the Works Cited/citation creator in Microsoft® Word or any other word processing program, or on the Internet, to create your Works Cited, for two reasons: 1) I want to know you can create one on your own, and 2) They are not always correctly formatted. You will also submit a preliminary Works Cited (see instructions in Lesson 3.2). Essay Guidelines 1.Typed, double-spaced 2.Times New Roman, 12 point font. 3.Margins – 1” on all sides of the page 4.The page heading should be typed in the top left of your paper, double-spaced, and formatted as indicated below: Your name Tina Shelby English 1302 Date (spell out: January 1, 2011 or 1 January 2011) DO NOT type the heading in the header of your paper, as it will show up on every page of your paper, which is not good. It should be centered; do not use all caps; do not underline; do not enclose in quotation marks; do not bold. Make sure all words that should be capitalized are capitalized. 7.All essays should follow the five-paragraph format. 8.Introduction: Your paper should include an introductory paragraph with a clear, effective thesis statement that notes the main points of the essay. It should be one sentence–no more than two–placed at or near the end of the introduction, and should be highlighted (if you don’t know how to highlight, contact me). Use a color other than yellow to highlight, as I use yellow to indicate revisions I make in your paper. Do not announce what you plan to write. By this I mean don’t use phrases such as In this paper, You will see, or something similar. 9.Body: Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence introducing the main point for that paragraph. It should be the first sentence of the paragraph and should be highlighted. Your paper should have a minimum of three body paragraphs. 10.Conclusion: The conclusion reiterates the main points of your paper, links them together, and links them back to the purpose of the essay. Do not use “in conclusion”! 11.Don’t use second person pronouns: you, your, yours, y’all 12.Don’t use contractions. 13.Papers should be written in third person.
