Final Paper Instructions CHDV 138 Social/Emotional Development 65 Points Possible The purpose of this assignment is to apply the knowledge you have gathered throughout this semester and use it to critique two empirical research articles on a social/emotional development topic of your choice. You will provide a summary and critique of each article, compare/contrast the articles and relate them to at least two course theories. This is the culminating assignment for this course and for full credit you must show an integration of course ideas and concepts. Note: An empirical research article is one that reports research conducted by the authors. Your selected articles must appear in peer reviewed journals and have been published since 2000. When completing your paper you must include the following six sections: 1. Topic a. Identify and define your topic. b. Relate to key course concepts. c. Why is this an important topic for development? d. If available provide relevant statistics. 2. Article 1 Summary & Critique a. Summarize Article 1 i. General topic of the study ii. Main research question or hypothesis iii. Subjects? How many? iv. General data collection method or research design? v. Answer to research question or was hypotheses supported? vi. Most significant one or two findings related to your topic? b. Critique Article 1 i. Given what you know about the normal development of this topic among people the age of the subjects in this study – are these findings surprising? Why or why not? ii. Does this article have any implications for teaching, child care, parenting, prevention/intervention, or policy? If so, what? iii. Was the sample appropriate? What limitations may it have to generalizability of findings? iv. Was the method appropriate? What limitations may it have on the strength of the conclusions? v. Theory Application (Note: This section is weighted the most so it gets the most points.) a. Apply two theories to your topic and tie in information from your articles where appropriate. i. Identify theorist and theory ii. Explain how each theory is related to the topic iii. Apply each theory to explain the normal behavior of people the ages included in the two studies. iv. How would each theorist explain the findings of each article? Remember that attachment styles and parenting styles are not theories. 6. Conclusions a. Writing Instructions: • Paper must be typed, double-spaced, and single-sided. • Should have 1 inch margins. • Should include appropriate references in-text and in a reference list (see APA handbook) • Include a cover page with title, your name, course number/name, and semester • Paper should be written as an essay with topic sentences for each paragraph and a discussion type flow. • Paper should not be prepared in outline or bulleted form. • Please use your own words and use quotes sparingly!!!
